Stranded in the middle of the Mojave Desert, surrounded by zombies, Vivian and Axl’s group are sure they’re facing the end. The dead are closing in and the shelter they were promised is sealed tight, only they refuse to go down without a fight. Just when they think they’ve run out of time, the doors to the shelter are thrown open and they’re given refuge. Five years in underground condos with all the provisions there for the taking. It’s almost too good to be true. With the promise of security, Vivian hopes she’ll finally able to take a deep breath and deal with everything that’s happened.
What is your favorite part of Shattered World?
When I think back on this book, there are a couple parts that really stand out to me.
First, the brief reprieve the group gets at the beginning of the book. The world as they know it has collapsed, they were dragged out into the middle of nowhere by some rich asshole only to find themselves trapped in the desert, zombies had surrounded them and they thought for sure it was the end, and then the door opens. As far as they know, the shelter is a sanctuary, so it makes sense that they’d want to take some time and relax and celebrate. It gives us a little glimpse into who these people were before the virus, and gives Vivian and Axl the perfect chance to let go.
The second part I love is when Vivian and Axl get stranded in Vegas. The moment in the car is amazing, because they’re sure facing death and it gives them a chance to really see each other. Both have been holding back, but at that moment they realize how stupid it is. Then they escape and make to the Paris casino, and even though they’re trapped in a city overrun with zombies, both of them are confident in the fact that Angus will do whatever it takes to save them. Okay, to save Axl, but Vivian will get rescued at the same time. I just loved generating a way for them to be alone during all the chaos and to actually enjoy themselves.
