When Vivian and Hadley find themselves in a situation even more threatening than the dead walking the Earth, Axl and Angus must find a way to put the growing tension between them aside and work together to rescue their friends.

What’s your favorite part about Mad World?

There’s a lot to love in this book.

The whole plot at the casino was horrible and dark, but I enjoyed writing it because it felt so real to me. I know that sounds crazy to some people, but I like being able to put myself in other people’s shoes and try and see the world from their POV when I’m writing, and that means both the good guys and the bad guys.

I also loved writing from Axl’s POV. When I had Hadley and Vivian get captured, I knew I was going to have to do that if I wanted to keep the reader informed about what was happening with the rest of the group, and to be honest, I really wasn’t sure if I could do it. Once I started, though, I really got into it. It was so fun to get into his head and explore this very complex and damaged character, and to see Angus through his eyes and illustrate how much Axl was changing and growing.

The tension between Angus and Axl was phenomenal to create. These brothers have only ever had each other to depend on, and Axl has always looked up to his older brother, but the world has forced him to change and see one another differently, and it was fun to write. I always knew I would redeem Angus, but I think this was the book where I really started to love him, because being able to see him through Axl’s eyes – even though they were mad at each other – I was able to start picturing a softer side.

I loved having Angus beat the shit out of Mitchell. If anyone deserved it, this guy did, and Angus is the perfect person to do the job. It was nice to have this hard ass character who everyone hates do something that makes you cringe while also shrugging and thinking: it’s not like the guy wasn’t asking for it.
