“They came four years ago. Invaded our planet, rounded us up, decimated the human race. We fought back, and some even say we won, but they’re wrong. The invaders took everything from us. Our family. Our hope. Our humanity. We won the war, but there are no humans left. Only monsters who will do anything to survive. Some look human and some don’t, but they are all the same.”

What can you tell us about the setting in When We Were Human?

This book takes place in Georgia, which if you know anything about me, you’ll know I lived there for a year. Specifically in Valdosta, which just so happens to be Eva’s home town.

It’s been quite a while since I was in Valdosta – we lived there from August of 2005 to July of 2006 – and even when I started writing this it had been nearly 10 years. Now, I could tell you very little about the city, but back then I could remember some details and I did my best to add them in. The neighborhood I described where *spoiler* Eva finds Lilly was based on a real neighborhood, and the coffee shop she mentions was real as well. I did my best to describe the location of the Air Force base correctly and even threw in some other details that stuck out at the time, but honestly, I can’t remember much about it now. Anyway, this is just another example of me adding a place I’ve lived into one of my stories and doing my best to describe it as accurately as possible.

The other thing I loved about the setting was being able to create an apocalyptic world that didn’t depend on zombies. Five years after a major battle between humans and aliens, most of the population is gone and the world is pretty desolate. Cities were destroy during the war – we learn Atlanta is gone – and entire neighborhoods or towns have burned down since then. This was the first real post-apocalyptic setting I got to create since the Broken World series started at the beginning and we got to slowly watch civilization crumble as the books progressed. Here, though, I started after things had already deteriorated, and I got to describe the desolation left in the wake of the alien invasion, which was pretty cool.
