“They came four years ago. Invaded our planet, rounded us up, decimated the human race. We fought back, and some even say we won, but they’re wrong. The invaders took everything from us. Our family. Our hope. Our humanity. We won the war, but there are no humans left. Only monsters who will do anything to survive. Some look human and some don’t, but they are all the same.”

Where did you get the idea for When We Were Human?

The first thing that popped into my mind before I started writing When We Were Human was just a character. She was alone and fierce, but damaged. I imagined cuts all up and down her arms to mark her kills and people seeing her from far away and being afraid. That isn’t exactly how Eva turned out, but it was a starting off point for me – if you’ve read the book, you know she’s a cutter. I was a big fan of the TNT television show Falling Skies, staring Noah Wyle, which is about a group of human survivors fighting for control of Earth after an alien attack, and it seemed natural to throw this fierce character into a post alien invasion world. Those two things were my jumping off point, but that was really all I had. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t really plot, so when I started writing, I just clung to those two things: the character I’d envisioned and the aliens she was determined to punish for destroying her life. After that, the story pretty much created itself.

I will make a note here since this is my last post about When We Were Human. One of the characters dislocates his/her shoulder in this story, and I chose that injury because I’ve seen in portrayed on television and in movies so many times and it always seems like such a minor thing once the arm is popped back into the socket. I’ve since dislocated my shoulder and now know that is NOT the case. It’s not minor. At all.
