After a year with her dying aunt, Bette knows what she wants from life.

  1. Keep Aunt Missy’s house.
  2. Get her dream job.
  3. Never compromise.

Chris Pressley is the perfect roommate — uptight and damaged and hung up on his ex. And hot. Bette doesn’t date, but she definitely likes looking.

Chris just needs to get away from the happiest couple on campus: the sweet, shy girl he loves and his former best friend. Watching Bette rock her tattoos and her curves even as she builds her own business is an education. That’s probably why he can’t keep his mind off her….

Bette isn’t interested in changing for anyone. But the heat rising between her and Chris won’t leave her the same….

What can you tell us about the characters in Moving On?

I wasn’t sure how I would write Chris when I started this because he wasn’t all that likable in the other books – he was a little too desperate and needy – but writing the story from his point of view and getting to know him better made me fall in love with him. While he came across as a tad overwhelming before, in this book we get to see his vulnerable side and just how giving and caring he is. We learn a lot more about his relationship with Ryan – who has been his best friend since they were young – and even see him interact with his family. I really loved how he came alive in this story, and I know other people have told me how surprised they were to learn that they actually liked him.

Told from dual perspectives, we also get to see the story through Bette’s eyes. Of all my characters, I sometimes think she’s the one I identify with the most. She grew up with very conservative parents and always feels like no matter what she does she can’t live up to their expectations, and she struggles with making them happy while still being true to herself. (I’m sure I’m not the only person who identifies with that.) She’s a neat freak – guilty – and she’s determined and she refuses to live up to anyone else’s expectations.

Together, these two are perfect.

A few other quick notes about the characters in this story.
One: Bette is pronounced like Bette Midler NOT like Bette Davis.
Two: She was originally named Camryn but since Chris’s name started with a C, I changed it. I find that I tend to accidentally pick one letter and give all my characters names that start with the same letter, and it gets confusing at times, so often I have to mix it up during the second draft.
Three: A minor character in the book is Reed Hopewell, and he’s borrowed from my very good friend Diana Gardin. You can read all about him in Falling Deep!
