For the past two years, Jules has floated through life.

When the virus was released it changed everything about the world. Jules lost her mom and her home, forcing her to live with the father she barely knows. Now, even as society works to rebuild, Jules still feels like she doesn’t quite fit in.

Then she meets Roman.

Even before the zombies, he only had himself to depend on. Brooding and rebellious, Roman isn’t anyone Jules would have pictured herself with before the zombies came. But now she finds herself willing to give up everything to be with him.

The attraction is too strong for either one of them to ignore, but Roman and Jules soon discover that the uncertainty of their new world extends much farther than just the zombies. When disaster strikes, Roman must race against the most terrifying clock imaginable to save Jules, or once again end up alone.

What can you tell us about the setting and characters in Alone?

I chose to set Alone in a post-apocalyptic community in South Carolina somewhere near Hilton Head. I wanted a pretty setting. This is also the first time I mention DC since Jules and her father are from there, and if you’ve read my Twisted World series, you know it eventually becomes a prison colony. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, this is also the first glimpse we get of New Atlanta, which we’ll later spend a lot of time in with Meg and Donaghy. Like I also mentioned, I had no intention of writing that other series when I created the colony, and I simply thought I was giving readers a glimpse of where Axl, Vivian, and crew were living 2 years down the road.

This is also my first time creating an independent post-apocalyptic town, which is located in a small, walled section of Hilton Head. I had a really great time imagining how people would modify a town to make it safe from zombies, and what they might – or might not – find of value in such a world.

As far as characters go, there are several crossovers here, which I know fans were excited about. The first are Mike and Becca, who are not only in Broken Stories (Starting Over) but Meg also meets Becca in Twisted World when she goes to buy a gun, and Mike meets with Axl and Joshua about working on the black market in Twisted Memories. Mike ends up being the first contact Roman makes when he arrives in the city, and later he meets Becca as well. He then meets Joshua and Axl, and eventually Parv as he’s sneaking out of the city. Their parts are small, but significant, and I knew readers would be thrilled to see their old friends pop up.
