In a world fueled by greed and corruption, where airships rule the skies and coal mines have been turned into prisons, Scarlett Moon has one goal: survive. Being tough and looking out for herself is the only way to stay alive, but when her best friend, Rory, is arrested and returned to the mines, all of Scarlett’s carefully built walls threaten to crumble.

After being rescued by an airship full of pirates, led by the sexy and irresistible Asher Kimura, Scarlett finds herself surrounded by cons and fugitives, and thrust into the middle of a coal-smuggling business. When they take her to Columbus, the one place she never wanted to set foot in again, she wants nothing more than to get away. And her discomfort only grows as she becomes increasingly drawn to Asher.

But everything changes when she discovers there may be a way to rescue Rory. Enlisting the pirates’ help, Scarlett sets out on a mission to save her friend, praying that her overwhelming attraction to Asher doesn’t mean the end to her freedom – in more ways than one.

What can you tell us about the characters in Moonchild?

I wanted to make sure to have a lot of diversity in my characters, both to represent other people groups but also because it’s a future world and I would hope after an apocalyptic event, race wouldn’t matter as much.

I chose Scarlett for my main character because I love the name, and because I’ve always been a huge Gone with the Wind fan. Like her namesake, Scarlett Moon is a complex character with a lot of baggage and layers. She’s prickly, and still young enough to not totally know who she is, which makes her come across as cold at times. She does a lot of growing throughout this book, which was fun to write, and has to really face here emotions and accept that having them doesn’t make her weak.

Asher Kimura is the hero of the story, and like Scarlett, he has a lot of baggage. I adore Asher, which is why I named my dog after him. He had a really difficult beginning and has a lot of demons, but he strives to be the best person he can be. No matter what. I love that he’s always running toward trouble and trying to help, and I love how much he wants to help people. Of all my characters, he’s definitely my favorite. Also, here’s a picture of my puppy.

Paget is such a dark and troubled character, which has made her really fun to write. In this book, she’s not the greatest. She’s still hurting after her breakup with Asher and immediately knows that Scarlett is the perfect person for her, which makes her more than a little hostile. More on her in later posts as I discuss the next two books, but for now I just want to mention that I got her name from the actress Paget Brewster, who played Kathy in 6 episodes of Friends. (She was Joey’s girlfriend but Chandler fell for her and they later dated – until she cheated.)
