This week, I’m talking about Liberation, which is the sequel to Moonchild!

This book came out in November of 2016, but I wrote it years before that. Right after finishing the first book. At the time, I was searching for an agent, so I put both books aside and continued working on various projects in the hopes that I would have someone who could get me a book deal. If you’ve read my other posts, you know I did get an agent, she loved Moonchild, we subbed it to editors for a long time, but it never went anywhere. Which is why I decided to self-publish the books.

The original manuscript of Liberation had a different ending. The group didn’t hunt down Spike after the funeral, and there was no resolution to that storyline. The idea at the time was that they’d catch up with him in another book, but I decided to change that. One of the things I like about the Moonchild books is that each one is its own story. Yes, there’s some overlap – such as Asher’s dad – but there’s a resolution to the current problem at the end of each book. Meaning there are no cliffhangers. While I’m a fan of cliffhangers, that just wasn’t something I wanted to do with this series.

Honestly, this world is my favorite, and I love the second book so much because you really get to see a lot of it. We also get a better glimpse into the world of the pirates, and we even leave the city! It was fun to create the crumbling part of Columbus the pirates typically inhabit, and I loved being able to build more on Scarlett and Asher and their relationship. She had a lot of growing up to do in the first book, and I think you can really see a big change in her in this one. It was especially fun to force her and Paget into a situation where they had to depend on each other for survival, and of course, the setting was fantastic. If you’ve never heard of Hocking Hills, you should definitely check it out – and visit if you’re ever in Ohio. Ash Cave is the area the group camped out in, so that part was real, but as far as I know, there are no caves hidden by a waterfall. That was something I added simply because I needed a place for Scarlett and Paget to take cover.

Like with Moonchild, Liberation got a cover makeover a few years ago. While I have a soft spot for the original – I like the black and white with the red lettering – the new cover better reflects the genre and story, which is important.

Like I said in my post about Moonchild, I love these characters. Especially Asher. Which is why we named our puppy after him. Check out how big he’s gotten!
