I’m late – I’ve been REALLY busy – but I’m finally catching up with a post about Letting Go, which is the fourth book in the College of Charleston series. Like the other books, this one was originally published through Lyrical Press, an imprint of Kensington, through my agent. This book wasn’t planned as part of the series, but after releasing the first book and seeing how well it was doing – if you’ve read my posts, you know it didn’t stay that way – my editor at Kensington wanted me to write more, so I pitched the idea of Letting Go and got a deal right away.

I wrote the start of this book before I had a really good idea of where it was going, then put it aside when I got distracted by something else. When my editor wanted me to write another book in the series, I pulled it out and decided to use it as the starting point for my book. It’s kind of funny to me now, but my main character in Letting Go has a germ issue due to the fact that she grew up with a hoarder mother, and she’s never really been around dogs, so having one lick her freaks her out. In truth, I felt that way myself. (Not the hoarding part, but the germ/dog part.) I never liked having a dog in my face and getting licked by one was not something I wanted to happen. I’m still not as much of a dog person as most other people, but we got a puppy this past December and I love him so much that I’m getting better. Here’s Asher – named after the Moonchild series.

Anyway, writing Letting Go was fun because I’m sooo obsessed with watching Hoarders since I cannot for the life of me understand the compulsion to keep trash, but I’m also horrified by the show at the same time. I thought having a main character who had to deal with the literal baggage of having a hoarder mother while also navigating love and life would be interesting to write about, and it was. Of course, it didn’t do well, which is why I eventually pulled it just like the other books in the series and rereleased it. And while the original cover wasn’t awful, I love my new cover so much – and the interior formatting!
