I love this novella. Love the setting – Key West – and the characters, and I love the idea that someone can earn redemption at the end of the world
This story started with a simple yet all too familiar idea. The main character walks in on her cheating fiancé days before their wedding and decides to leave the world behind. Unluckily for her, the events happen to coincide with the spread of a killer virus and the start of the zombie apocalypse. She’s lucky, though, and the resort she’s run off to is on a secluded island.
The setting for this novel is real. Little Torch Key hotel and resort is so remote it’s only accessible by boat or plane. I stumbled upon it when I was writing a blog post in October of 2016 for the Band of Dystopian Authors Zombie Crawl. In it, I researched and listed the best place to hide in each state, and Little Torch Key is what I chose for Florida. It also happened to be what inspired me to write this story. I needed a realistic reason my main character would be at a hotel/resort by herself that would have typically been for couples, and a cheating fiancé seemed like the ideal solution. Like my other novellas, it’s a fast read with lots of heat, but it’s also one of the few that I’ve always intended to write a sequel to. Maybe one day I’ll get motivated to finish this story. Who knows!
