What can you tell us about the setting for The List?

If you’ve been following me for a while and know anything about me, you probably know that my husband is a C-17 pilot in the Air Force and we’ve moved around a lot. You might also know that I like to set my books in places we’ve lived, and this one is no exception. The List takes place in Charleston, SC, which is where my family lived for 4 years. My youngest two children were born there. It’s where we bought our first house. It’s where I met my best friend. I love Charleston.

In case you know nothing about the area, let me fill you in a little. Charleston is a historic city and has some of the best restaurants in the country. I’m not just saying that because it’s my opinion, it’s a fact. It’s number seven on this list from US News and named on a lot of other lists. It’s where I was first able to go out and have some really, really good food because we had finally reached a point in our marriage where we weren’t broke – plus I had some amazing friends. There’s a ton to do in Charleston as well, and it’s close to the beach. To say my time there was amazing is an understatement.

My character in The List are college students, so I didn’t have them running off to expensive restaurants constantly, but I did mention some places that are real. Annie and Chris go to Joe Pasta for the first date, which is real. I never went there myself, but I chose it because it was within walking distance of the dorm and it was always packed when I went by. Plus, it seemed like a place a college student would like to go. Ryan and Annie are avid runners and in the book often run past Water Front park and along the  Battery, which is a landmark defensive seawall and promenade lined with some beautiful historic homes. Water Front park is a favorite with my family because of the fountains there, both of which the kids loved to play and swim in when they were little. Here we are on our last visit to Charleston a few years ago in front of the pineapple fountain:

The group also goes to a beach house on Isle of Palms, which is where my family always went to the beach, as well as a part at Folly Beach. We did go there a couple times, but it was more touristy, so we typically stuck to Isle of Palms. The group goes to the same outlets I used to frequent as well – all my friends had babies when we were there so the Carter’s and Gymboree outlets were a must.

My family left Charleston in 2011 when my youngest child was 6 months old, but I’ve been back twice since. Once with my best friend and once with my family. Here a a few pictures from those visits.

There’s one more thing I wanted to point out, which is the road trip my characters take to Peachtree City. They go to visit Annie’s brother – and attend a football game – and I picked the city randomly off a map when I was writing this. It’s funny, because years later, my best friend was living in Peachtree City when I went to visit her. (This is when we drove to Charleston for the weekend.) She only lived there for a couple years, but during that time we went to stay with them several times, and we absolutely loved Peachtree City. It’s a golf cart community, so my friend drove a golf cart pretty much everywhere, and we rented one as well while we were there. My kids loved it!
