After weeks on the road and devastating losses, the survivors have finally found safety. But as winter falls on Colorado, it brings with it both new challenges and new hope.

What can you tell us about the writing of New World?

When I started writing New World, it was supposed to be the last book in the series, and I’d planned to split it into two parts. Part one was going to be the group trying to survive a long, harsh winter, and part two would be them traveling to Atlanta after being reunited and learning that the CDC was looking for immune people. As I wrote, though, it just got longer and longer, and I soon realized that there was no way I would be able to wrap everything up in one book. But I kept writing it as one long book, planning to find a good place to cut it in half so I could publish it as two books and put them out close together, which is why this book was released in November of 2015 and Forgotten World came out only a month later.

New World is the only book I’ve ever written from four distinct perspectives. But I felt it was important since the two groups were still split up. Axl and Vivian are at the gated community, while Jon and Ginny are in Hope Springs. So close, but they have no idea. It’s split into months, starting in November and ending in April when *spoiler* the group is finally reunited, and bounces back and forth between the two groups. I’d already written from the perspective of everyone but Jon, and I was excited to write from Axl’s POV again, as well as to be able to explore Jon a little more. If I hadn’t known these characters so well by this point, I don’t know if writing from four different perspectives would have worked. Luckily, Axl and Vivian felt almost like real people to me by the time I started writing this book.
