After weeks on the road and devastating losses, the survivors have finally found safety. But as winter falls on Colorado, it brings with it both new challenges and new hope.

What can you tell us about the characters of New World?

We get to see a lot of growth in this book. Ginny is coming to terms with her condition, trying to find her place in Hope Springs, and getting more comfortable being with Jon.

Back in the gated community, Angus has grown and is starting to get along with people better, almost learning that he’s immune has given him a new perspective or a new chance.

We meet Jim for the first time, who pops up in a lot of later books: Silent World, Twisted World, Twisted Memories, Twisted Fate, and The Sweetest Torment. I was watching Sons of Anarchy when I started writing this and 100% modeled him off of Jax, played by Charlie Hunnam. I felt like his reserved, dark persona was the perfect contrast to Jon.

Vivian and Darla’s relationship is beginning to heal thanks to Angus’s speech in Lost World when he thought he was dying. Vivian’s less angry and her mom is pushing her less, which makes them both hopeful that one day they can repair things.

While most people are still clinging to hope, Winston is going downhill fast in this book, and I don’t think his end comes as much of a surprise to anyone.

Overall, this book was a bridge to get the characters where they needed to go, which is why the main focus was on them and how much the apocalypse has changed them, and how much they can still change.
