After the longest winter of her life, Vivian is thrilled to have Ginny back at her side. But joy soon turns to shock when the group learns that not only is Hope Springs in contact with other survivors, but the CDC is working on a vaccine. And Angus could be the last hope for the human race.

What can you tell us about writing Forgotten World?

If you read my posts from last week, you already know that this book wasn’t supposed to exist. I’m glad it does, though, because I definitely would have been rushing the story to get all of it crammed into one book.

In Forgotten World, I returned to writing from one perspective – Vivian’s – and there’s a reason I did that. Because I didn’t want the reader to know who made it to the end. I never intended to kill Axl off – I will admit that I love him too much for that – but I wanted there to be a sense of dread or urgency, and having the book from Vivian’s POV alone seemed like a good way to do that. With the story being told by her alone, it means that no one else is safe, which we learn early on when Jon dies – and then Ginny shortly after.

When I wrote this book, I 100% intended for it to be the final book in the group’s journey. Seven books is a lot, and I while I loved the characters and their story, I was anxious to move on to new worlds and new characters. I made sure to give myself a way to pick the story back up if I changed my mind though. Ending it the way I did could have wrapped everything up: Angus is dead, the group is safe, everything is happily ever after now. Or I could easily start writing more: the CDC lied, Angus is alive, the place is corrupt, nothing will ever be safe again. I knew readers would want more, but I needed a break, which was why I did it this way. I’m so glad I did, too, because it didn’t take long for me to realize that the story was definitely not done.
