After weeks on the road and devastating losses, the survivors have finally found safety. But as winter falls on Colorado, it brings with it both new challenges and new hope.

RIP: Characters we lost in New World

Darla – Vivian and her mom were just staring to repair their relationship and Angus was happy for maybe the first time in his life, and Darla has to go and die. At least she went out in a heroic way, which was putting herself between Vivian and danger. Darla abandoned her daughter, leaving her with an abusive father, and was never a great mom herself, but in the end she did the right thing, and for that – and because she helped change Angus – we can say RIP Darla. Thanks for saving Vivian.

Winston – I really felt as if Winston’s character had outlived his usefulness – plus it made sense that he’d take his daughter’s death hard. When Angus was an asshole, Winston was Axl’s right hand man. They bounced ideas off each other, kept the group going, and made sure they had plans in place in case of an emergency. But with Angus’s growth, Axl didn’t really need Winston as much. He had his brother, who was the one person he could always count on before the virus, and it makes sense that he’d lean on Angus more than Winston. As much as I hated having a strong character give up, I felt like it was the right end for Winston.

Sophia’s Baby – This baby was never going to make it. The odds weren’t good to begin with since Sophia’s husband died of the virus, but add to that the fact that most of the babies being born in Hope Springs – and Atlanta – were dying, and the chances were even smaller. I needed the baby to die, though, because it helped push Ginny in the direction I needed her to go. She’s very pregnant at this point and traveling across the country isn’t smart, but desperate times call for desperate measures, so it makes sense that, given the state of things, she’d risk everything to get to Atlanta.
