After weeks on the road and devastating losses, the survivors have finally found safety. But as winter falls on Colorado, it brings with it both new challenges and new hope.

What is your favorite thing about New World?

This might possibly be the most character driven book of the series, which made it a lot of fun to write because I got to go into a lot of detail about how much these people have grown and changed, both for the better and the worse. That’s one of the things I love about apocalyptic fiction. It’s fun to explore the different ways people might react to a situation like this, either rising to the occasion or failing miserably.

I also loved have Angus actually be a part of the group in this book. If you’ve read his book, you now have more insight into who he was and why he did some of the things he did, but back when I wrote this, he was still a pretty big mystery. Even to himself. I loved some of the little moments that popped up, like when Axl does math in his head and Angus muses that maybe he’d been wrong to discourage his brother from going to college, or when Winston dies and Angus is the one to start digging the hole.

I also like that Al’s knowledge of zombie fiction comes in handy once again. It’s something a lot of people wonder about: Why in most zombie books/movies/shows do the characters act as if they’ve never heard of zombies? I think in things like The Walking Dead, it’s written as if zombie fiction doesn’t exist. As if the idea that a dead body could possibly reanimate is something no one has ever thought of. I didn’t want to do that, especially because I was inspired by The Walking Dead and I wanted to be able to give the creators credit when their work influenced me, which is pretty easy when you have a character who just so happens to be a huge fan. Like Al.
